Bryant Describes Trends in Interior Decorating
Speaker at Women’s Council of Realtors Lunch

Warm colors, fabrics, fringes and the use of more wallpaper to create warmth in the home are at the forefront in today’s home décor, according to Tim Bryant of Tim Bryant Interiors.

Speaking at the monthly luncheon of the Women’s Council of Realtors at the Chattanooga Golf & Country Club, Mr. Bryant said among popular colors are soft blues chocolate, gold, coral and soft mossy or earthy greens. Also peach is coming in, he added.

Embroidered fabrics along with fringes, tassels and beads are gaining in popularity and oriental fabrics are big along with long-lasting wool carpet.

“We do a lot of dust ruffles,” he said, and to use fringes or beads “we use Velcro” to attach them.

Mr. Bryant, who has a showroom on Broad Street, said there are “six of us” on the staff. He said, “We come into your house and do an accessory job,” pulling ideas together, accessorizing and creating a “whole fresh look.” He said it’s up to the customer to “decide what you want to keep.”

He said, “People are spending so much money on their homes” and want to create warm, comfortable surroundings.

He said sheers are being used more but it “doesn’t have to be the old cream sheers.” Sheers in color are being used.

“Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, as long as you get the scale right,” he said.

Painted walls are used with stencil prints added and clear colors are a little more popular and a lot is being done with paper. In the most recent wallpaper books, there are more seashells.

Blue-greens are on the down track and animal prints are phasing out, he continued.

In decorating, he said, it is important to “tie rooms together” with colors and patterns.

He said when he does a “spec house” for a builder, “we put in more color” because the potential buyer looking at white walls has trouble deciding “what to do now.
